What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are organic compounds derived from plant sources such as roots, bark, flowers and seeds. They are complex chemical compounds and not technically oils at all!  They are extracted using a variety of methods to capture the scented particles, leaving many of the other chemical constituents of the plant behind.

Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy based on holistic principles, using the application of essential oils to improve mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Oils can be applied in a variety of ways apart from massage.

Why do we use Essential Oils?

The skin reflects your general state of health like a mirror.  A physiological disturbance, a dietary imbalance, poor lifestyle or any kind of stress is all it takes for the body to reflect the problem directly on the skin.  This is why we often get spots or look blotchy.

Essential Oils are particularly effective in addressing these “disorders” thanks to their rebalancing properties.  Impermeable to water, but permeable to gases and oils, the epidermis is able to absorb Essential Oils.  This perfect affinity allows Essential Oils to penetrate the skin deep-down.

Essential Oils can enhance your body and your well-being by three important ways:

  • Through massage, they are able to enter the bloodstream, resulting in positive body changes

  • Once applied, the Essential Oils have a profound effect on the body, are able to simulate or relax, soothe or purify the skin.

  • Finally, the simple act of inhaling Essential Oils causes your body and emotions to respond positively.

This is why massage is a particulary good way of using Essential Oils.  You get the benefit if it being massaged directly into the skin and breathing it in via the Olfactory System.
