Thermo-Auricular Therapy
(Ear Candling)
The practice of ear candling is an ancient art used in many countries such as Mexico, China, Czechoslovakia, and Italy.
Ear candles, also called ear cones are long, hollow tubes made of wrapped muslin, soaked in honey, beeswax and herbs. Their primary use is for ear wax removal, helping unblocked ears and lack of hearing (due to ear wax build up).
It is important to note that the candle does not suck wax out of the ear, it stimulates the ear to eliminate the wax naturally, ensuring maximum safety.
How are the candles used?
The treatment should be carried out in a relaxed, draught free atmosphere and the patient should lie in a comfortable position on his/her side with the head supported on a pillow. A small cotton towel or flannel should cover the hair. The lit candle is inserted carefully into the outer ear and the flame is allowed to burn down to within a short distance of a marked red line, when the candle is removed gently and extinguished in some water. The practitioner then massages gently around the ear, using draining movements down the neck.
The procedure is repeated with the other ear, and then the patient lies on his/her back for gentle drainage massage on the face.
It is then important for the patient to have a drink of water and lie still for about 15 minutes before he/she stands up.
What are the benefits?
Hopi candles can be used for many conditions including deafness caused by excess wax, congested sinuses, irritation in the ears, ringing or noises in the ears, tinnitus, rhinitis, glue ear, colds, flu, headaches and migraines. As their action is so gentle, they are particularly suitable for children.
What are the effects?
In most cases the treatment is extremely soothing and relaxing, leaving the patient with a sense of well-being and reduced pressure in the ears or head. A little warmth is felt, and hissing and crackling noises are heard, with a little popping. Most people say that it is a very pleasant experience!
The initial effect can be an improvement in hearing or freer nasal breathing and an improved sense of smell. However, improvements can continue occurring for a day or two.
When should the candles not be used?

Providing you have none of these existing conditions Hopi Ear Candling should be a perfectly safe treatment for you to have. The number of Hopi treatments that may be needed to cure a problem depends on a number of factors. The age of the person, the length of time they have had the condition and what condition the person is suffering from. The older the person and the longer they have had the condition the more treatments that will be needed before there is a noticeable improvement, and some conditions are much more treatable than others, therefore fewer treatments are needed for positive results to be achieved .

What to Expect During a Hopi Ear Candling Treatment - Before you have your Hopi Ear Candling treatment you will be given a full consultation and asked a number of questions regarding any problems that you may have with your ears. This is to help assess whether Hopi candling will be a safe treatment for you to have and to find out what your expectations of the treatment are.
You will be placed in a comfortable position laying down on your side. The Hopi candle will be gently placed just inside the ear canal and lit. The candle will be held firmly in place to prevent any of the ash from falling in or around the ear.
You will experience a fire crackling sound as the candle burns and possibly some popping of the ear. You will also feel a gentle massaging sensation to the ear drum and some heat as the candle burns lower. When the candle has burned it is carefully removed from the ear and extinguished. The entire process is then repeated for the other ear.
Once both ears have been treated you will be left to relax for a few minutes before receiving a soothing sinus or auricular massage and then(new) a relaxing hand massge to finish the therapy and leave you feeling utterly relaxed. Whether you receive the massage and the type of massage you wish to have is your own choice although it can aid the positive benefits of your treatment.
