What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a bodywork that focuses on releasing restriction in the body's soft tissue - the deep layers of fascia. The fascial system forms a three dimensional network that extends in a continuous web throughout the body from the top of your head to the tips of your toes and by working on even just one area, can have far reaching effects.

MFR can release tight scar tissues, aid movement following injury or surgical procedures, help postural misalignment issues, ease pain and musculoskeletal dysfunctions and aid recover from disease. As this large connected network is impacted over the course of our lives with adhesions and restrictions these set up lines of tension that can contribute to various symptoms, for example abdominal surgery can create scar tissue that contributes to lower back pain and impact the body throughout, reducing the range of movement in the shoulder. Historic injuries may still be pulling within the fascial network that contributes to chronic neck ache.

The holistic method I use has been developed by the physiotherapist John Barnes which works beyond aiding mobility in the physical structure of the body. The well proven links of our mind body connections are also valued within this treatment and physical restoration can be accompanied by the natural release of the emotional stress and trauma contained within the body from physical and emotional experiences.

A typical session is non prescriptive, uses gentle but sustained holding to engage the fascia and encourage it to relax, break down adhesions and promote a return to a buoyant, relaxed and energised state. MFR techniques are gentle and safe and highly effective for optimal functioning and health.

Please refrain from applying any moisturisers to the skin prior to treatment.
